The majority of my editorial assignments come with a challenge: make the most out of not much. If it's a studio shot, I won't have the budget for fancy sets or styling. If it's a location shoot, the spaces are often underwhelming architecturally. So what's a photographer to do? This one prepares. I learn as much as I can about the story being told. I scout the location ahead of time, even meeting the subject quickly if I can. Then I imagine compositions, angles, techniques and poses that make the photo compelling.
In the case of the shot above for Investment Advisor, I had to lobby for the lobby with the building's super. Then I timed the session for maximum sunlight to blow out the back. Finally, I created a grainy, desaturated look to contrast with the self-importance of the arches. Personally, I like the art director's headline with the parentheses -- it echoes the arches and the contrast of humble versus grand.
