My heart gladdened when my client told me one of my photo shoot destinations this year. What do you suppose caused the joy? A trip to Fiji, perhaps, or China? Nope. I was going to Austin, Texas!
Lest you remain confused, consider this: what Chicago's American Girl store is to every six-year-old dreamy-eyed doll collector, Austin's Mellow Johnny's bike shop is to every red-blooded, jersey-wearing velo enthusiast. It's Lance's store, where the famed yellow jerseys and $6,000-per-set carbon wheels adorn the walls.

This humble road biker built time in the schedule to make his pilgrimage, sipping an extra-special cafe latte and snapping up an assortment of water bottles, socks, and hats for cycling compatriots at home. A designer friend and I even made a pact to purchase and wear our Mellow Johnny's jerseys this summer.
After the tour through wonderland, our group stopped at Guero's Taco bar for some of Austin's celebrated Tex Mex. I heartily recommend the Santa Fe Enchiladas topped with fried eggs.

An afternoon stroll through downtown took us past the historic Driskill hotel where Texans LBJ and Bush 42 awaited the results of the 1964 and 2000 presidential elections. Officially, Austin's the capitol of Texas; unofficially it's the "Live Music Capitol of the World." It was fitting, then, that a street performer stopped us for a song. Too bad our early morning photo call prevented an evening of live music -- we'll have to save that for the next time in town.
