He's the Apollo of the motocross freestyle world. Owns the longest jump ever -- 322 feet, 7.5 inches. Flew his bike over the Tower Bridge in London. Soared 96 feet to the top of the Arc de Triomphe replica in Las Vegas -- then landed a 5o-foot freefall down the other side. Leapt the Corinth Canal in Greece.
Last month, Red Bull's magazine, Red Bulletin, sent me to Robbie "Maddo" Maddison's home in California to photograph the Australian boy wonder as he recovers from a devastating crash in September. I had just shot the other half of the story -- recovery from a dangerous crash by Minnesotan snowmobile phenom Levi LaValle -- when the photo editors decided they needed my eye for the Maddo angle, too.
Both men surprised me. Where I might have expected intensity or edginess, I found down-to-earth, good-natured subjects who were willing to go with the flow. My assignment included both studio and environmental shots, so I asked a lot. I'll show the finished product when the magazine comes out, but for now, here are a few glimpses of the shoot in Maddo's property among the wineries of Temecula. (Instead of grape vines, Robbie has trails and ramps in his front yard!)
